March Madness Update #1
March 25, 2021
The first weekend of march madness lived up to its name. The Tournament has been chaos. With 15 upsets surpassing the old record of 14 in a single tournament and we are just out of the first weekend. The Tournament started strong the first four games going toe to toe with the local Drake Bulldogs edging out the Wichita State Shockers 53-52 after storming back from an 11 point deficit in the second half. Joseph Yesufu led the Bulldogs with 21 points and the game-winning basket. Drake would advance to play the 6 seed Spartans of USC where they would end up being outlasted 72-56. Drake kept it close for the majority of the game but just ran out of steam at the end. Joseph Yesefu again led the scoring with 26 in this game but it was all in vain. Later that day our second local team the Iowa Hawkeyes beat the Antelopes of Grand Canyon 86-74. The Hawks were led by the Player of the Year favorite Luka Garza, who finished with 24 points. Iowa would advance to play the 7 seed Oregon Ducks who advanced off a no-contest due to a positive test with their first-round opponent VCU. Oregon would dominate this game beating the Hawkeyes 95-80. Luka Garza would put on a show with 36 points to end his spectacular career. But his effort was all for not as 3/5 of Iowa’s Starters wouldn’t score a point including senior Jordan Bohannon. The Ducks on the other hand were red hot shooting 56% from the field and 44% from behind the arc. Oregon was led by senior Chris Duarte who finished shooting 41% from the field with 23 points. Throughout the first weekend, there was one team that stood out: The Golden Eagles of Oral Roberts. No one expected Oral Roberts to make the Sweet 16 much less to beat Ohio State in the first round, but they shocked the world being the first 2 seed to beat a 15 seed since 2015. They proceeded to beat Florida and became only the second 15 seed to make the Sweet 16. Now they will play the 3 seed Arkansas Razorbacks to become the first 15 seed to reach the Elite 8.
