With the 2020 election finally over, the transition of power from President Trump to President-Elect Biden can begin. Biden finished the election with a six million vote lead and clenched the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency. But, Donald Trump and his allies have made claims that the election was stolen through rampant voter fraud. The only issue with these claims is that there has been no evidence to support that there was substantial fraud that could have swung the election. Even with no evidence, Trump has refused to concede the election and rile up his supporters with the claims.
The first claim that Trump and his allies have perpetrated in the last few weeks are the “ballot dumps” that Biden received in the days following the election. “Last night (November 3rd) I was leading by a lot…then, one by one, they started to magically disappear as surprise ballot dumps were counted,” Trump said in a tweet. The issue with labeling the counting of votes as “voter fraud” is a fundamental misunderstanding of how states tallied the votes. In the contentious state of Pennsylvania for example, any mail- in vote received before Election Day could not be counted until the night of the election; as per state law. These “dumps” of ballots were nothing more than large amounts of ballots being added to the state total. It is also important to mention that, according to the Pew Research Center, Democrats are more likely to vote by mail than their Republican counterparts.
Hours after the polls began to close and Trump’s leads began to shrink in swing states he needed to win, his team of lawyers launched multiple lawsuits against states. As of the time of writing, the Trump team has filed over 50 court cases and has only managed to win a handful. None of these suits have amounted to anything substantial in regards to changing the outcome of the election. The Attorney General of the United States, Bill Barr, has come forward by stating, ”to date, we have not seen fraud on a scale that could have affectedeffected a different outcome in the election.” In short, the Justice Department has found zero evidence that there was a scheme against President Trump to undermine his reelection campaign. Even with the Justice Department indicating there has been no fraud, Trump and his legal team continue the narrative that the election was somehow stolen from them.
In recent days, 18 states have backed a lawsuit by the State of Texas to overturn the election results. The lawsuit stated, “multiple irregularities have been found in the 2020 Election results and must be investigated.” This lawsuit was brought to the Supreme Court, but, with a 9-0 decision to not even review the case, it was thrown out. President-Elect Biden has been certified enough votes to be the official next president by the electoral college. The Trump team has essentially run out of options to challenge the results and over turn them. If Trump is determined to be the president again, there is always a potential run available for him in 2024.
