After days, weeks, months, and years of project-making and test-taking, sometimes a break is necessary. Many seniors at WHS work diligently so they can one day hear their name called through the grandstand and walk across the stage to receive a diploma.

Such hard work is not what one imagines after watching countless hours of High School Musical, but it is a reality. A break is what is needed at stressful points; but sometimes breaks end up being longer than expected, resulting in the whole senior year. It may include a break from school or a break from socializing with classmates, maybe even from late or unfinished homework. The constant procrastination is a condition called ‘senioritis,’ which affects many people. The side effects of senioritis are not wanting to finish or start on homework, attend school, and having a sad and exhausted mood. It can also cause irritation and lack of motivation. Homework can be a deal maker or a deal breaker for seniors with this problem. Most find it hard to summon the drive to start on the assignments or pay attention in class. Many believe senioritis occurs because there will not be any breaks after graduation, others believe that it is simply part of senior year.
The last year of high school may seem to be all fun and games; but in reality, in that one short year students reflect on everything else they do in life. Senior year is the year of figuring out what to do for the rest of life, figuring out what to do after high school: whether that means attending college or going straight into the workforce. For everyone, it is different. Senior Adriana Reys shares, “All the time I feel like since I’m thinking about almost graduating, I’m focusing too much on that– I don’t pay attention or try as much in my classes.” Graduation day is the day where seniors can finally say “ I did it!” and “ Congrats!”. Senior Savannah Doody comments, “Some days I don’t want to go to school because I want to avoid the responsibilities.” Sometimes, missing school can turn into a headache instead of a mind break. The homework doubles and students who skip school will miss out on instructions that are needed for that day. Sometimes the option you want is not always the best. Senioritis affects so many seniors, and even some juniors get it early. Senior Julia Lemmon states, “I haven’t done homework since junior year.” Lemmon’s lack of motivation started a little earlier than others’. Homework is hit-or-miss for many. Either it helps you out, or it does not do a thing . Ultimately, it varies from person to person.

It is no secret that underclassman look up to the seniors, so why show them laziness? Last year in the high school, usually the last year at home, and the last year to spend time with all the classmates you have had since kindergarten. Make the most of this last year and show others that this is the last year of the high school career: make it worth it.
