Finishing Football Season
November 4, 2018
Every football team in Iowa dreams of playing at the UNI Dome in the postseason. The Warriors got a chance to accomplish this feat last Friday as they traveled to take on the unbeaten Cedar Falls Tigers in the quarterfinals. The game concluded with a Cedar Falls victory by a score of 40-7 which brought the Waukee season to an end. They finished the year with eight victories with just three losses capping off a successful season that saw the team outperform their preseason ranking.
Senior Jacob Martin gave his thoughts on the Warrior’s finish, “Playing in the dome was fun, it obviously didn’t go as we wanted it to but it was still a great experience especially with a really young team and I think that will good for them going into next year.” While seniors played in their final game of their high career, underclassmen gain valuable experience heading into the next season. Junior Jalen Martinez will look to learn from this game heading into next season, “It sucks that we couldn’t have went to the semi finals but it was a cool experience especially for our underclassmen returning next year.”
Junior Sam O’Dell explains why the team had such a successful season,“Everyone having the same goals and playing for the person next to them and not themselves.” This team was a very tight knit group and their play on the field this season showcased that to spectators. Martinez also credits how crucial team chemistry was for their season, “I thought this year it was more of a brotherhood and that is why we had a lot of success because we trusted the guy next to us.”
Jacob Martin says the team should not dwell on this loss, “It didn’t end the way we wanted it to but we gave it our all everyday so there is nothing to be mad about.” Waukee was very promising this season and proved to once again be one of the best teams in the state of Iowa. Their success this season on the gridiron was able to serve a purpose by continuing to make the community proud. The underclassmen will look to build upon the experience they gained this season as they now begin preparation to make it back next year.
