Throwback Thursday: The Truman Show

September 13, 2018

Hi, my name is Stephen Holko and I like old movies. On Thursdays I post my opinions about classic films for the Waukee Arrowhead. Check out the entertainment section for more reviews from me, as well as other reporters.

Jim Carrey was is of Hollywood’s most active comedy actors, starring in at least one film nearly every year since his first role as Tony Moroni, a secondary protagonist the TV movie Rubberface, In 1981. Carrey, like most actors, has had movies good and bad, many agree, critics and fans of Carrey alike, that The Truman Show is one of, if not, Carrey’s best film.

The Truman Show focuses on, shocker, Truman and his day to day life. Truman is a normal guy, he has a job, a wife, a and the same day to day grind everyone else has. Truman would be a boring person if it wasn’t for one minute detail, his entire life is a lie. From the day he has been born, Truman has been watched, every second of every minute of every day, everyone’s been watching Truman, on his channel. Truman is the world’s most popular man, everyone watches him on TV, except he doesn’t know he’s on air. His entire life is a lie perpetuated for the entertainment of the world.

Truman would be a boring person if it wasn’t for one minute detail, his entire life is a lie… His entire life is a lie perpetuated for the entertainment of the world.”

Carrey’s portrayal of Truman is a combination of his well known psychotic style of humor, and the simple everyman, someone nearly everyone can relate to. The most interesting part of the film is the fourth wall perspective the audience has. The whole point is that Truman is the entertainment for the world, so the viewers of the film watch just that, Truman. Back when the film debuted it was a social commentary on the growing reality TV shows that since has skyrocketed in popularity.

Overall the Truman show is one of my favorite movies of all time, just for the concept alone. The combination of Jim Carrey’s performance, the excellent writing and dialogue, the concept of the film and the open ended ending always leaves a significant impact on the viewer. The film is a treat every time you watch it, and still holds up today I give it a 9/10.
