A Race to First: Zachary Bogaczyk’s Win

An Unexpected Journey…A Race to First

Junior student Zachary Bogaczyk had a sweet taste of victory on April 10th at the Regional Special Olympic Games.  He swam back-to-back races and placed first in the 50-yard freestyle and backstroke events.  However, getting to this place has been a journey that has required courage, self-determination and the support of Zachary’s community.

The sport of swimming was first introduced to Zachary when he was 12 years-old as a form of rehabilitation after undergoing spinal fusion surgery.  The Waukee YMCA offered an adaptive aquatics program which then escalated into a Special Olympics swim team.  Zachary’s love of this sport also extends to the high school as well.  For the past three years he has managed/coached the boys swim team and is thrilled to have two state titles under his belt!

What’s next?  Zachary will be competing at the Summer All-State Special Olympic Games on May 18th up in Ames at Iowa State University.  If you see him in the hallways be sure to wish him luck!
