“Mock trial is like a giant inside joke where all the case materials, all of us, become so familiar with it; and we refer to each other as the characters,” junior Bhavana Sirimalle reflected. Throughout the years of doing Mock Trial, a club at Waukee High School, the team and sponsor Benjamin Hicks worked on several cases and made many memories evolving from the Mock Trial events.

This year, the team accomplished the feat of qualifying for state. The last time this happened was about five years ago.

There are many more inside jokes that come along with the team like when senior Claire Brown was being cross examined and her attorney had enough of the harsh pestering when cross attorney was examining her case. “‘Stop badgering my witness’ is our team slogan now,” Brown stated, who is also the team captain of Mock Trial this year. Brown has participated in school’s varsity mock trial team for four years.

Peyton Soethout joined mock trial in seventh grade and has been in a mock trial team since then. “Honestly, my parents told me I needed a new place to argue,” she said.

Statewide, there are more than 200 teams, however, only 30 qualify for state. The Iowa State High School Mock Trial Tournament will take place on March 26-28 at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines.
